For international students whose principal language isn’t English the process of writing a college essay can be quite challenging.
However, English competence isn’t all when it comes to writing well. Even native English writers can have trouble if they don’t follow the proper approach.
Maurice Boissiere, lecturer and adjunct professor for English writing at the University of Maryland, confirms this belief.
“I have taught international students who received A’s on their essay as also local students who were failing this class” Boissiere told the AP. “Really all you need to do is inquire about the subject.”

The style, the format, and the purpose
What are some questions you can ask prior to writing an essay? Boissiere advised all students to inquire about the style design, structure, and goal.
The term “style” will determine whether your essay is an essay, research paper, position statement and an opinion piece or an essay that summarizes. Is your goal to persuade the reader of a position? Offering a wealth of data on a topic? A summary of a particular situation or incident? They all use different methods when it comes to writing style.
Format is the standard way an essay is structured and is referred to as Modern Language Association (MLA); American Psychological Association (APA) style, that is typically used for scientific papers. Chicago Manual of Style (CMOS).

Precision, concision, proofreading
In the wake of answering these questions there are three things you can do to make sure that the essay is correctly written.
The first point is precision the second tip is precision, or to speak clearly.
“When I notice words or phrases that are too complicated this is a massive signal to me,” Boissiere said. “There is no use for expressing yourself in such a sophisticated way if your reader does not understand what you’re saying.”
The other is concision in expressing ideas concisely.
“Writing is really thinking. If you’re not able express the thoughts you’re trying to convey across, then there’s confusion or vagueness in your idea,” Boissiere observed.
Also, ensure that you have someone — at least native speakers reviews your essay before printing the final version. Don’t send in an essay that is spelled incorrectly, has punctuation errors grammar, printing or spelling errors.
As you edit and write portions that may seem strange or odd to your American students, you’re actually learning more on U.S. culture.
“I always strive to assist international students proofread their papers should they require help. This is a part of my job here,” claimed John Pugh, graduate student and teaching assistant at the English Department.
“Cultural differences could be a hindrance for students from other countries who aren’t experienced in critical thinking. Writing certainly helps with this,” he added.
Then, Boissiere said, not enough students seek help.
“I have office hours every week to help with a specific reason,” Boissiere stated. “But I don’t see many students calling in to ask questions.”
